5 Apps to Help You Actually Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2019

Once a year, people around the world collectively decide to turn a new leaf and start bettering themselves. Now I’m not particularly one for making New Year’s resolutions but I salute the endeavors of those who annually vow to make meaningful changes in their lives. Kicking old habits and picking up new ones is certainly challenging, but it doesn’t always  have to be. Here are some of the top New Year’s resolutions for 2019 and some helpful mobile apps you can use to keep that momentum going all year long.

1. THE RESOLUTION: Eat healthier


I’ve tried nearly every food diary app out there but this one has by far been my favorite. Lifesum is more than just a calorie-counter. The app takes into account your current lifestyle, habits, goals and even weak areas to recommend the best ‘diet’ for you. Once you complete the built-in quiz, you’ll be matched up with meal plans complete with recipes and grocery lists. The app’s cheery interface and encouraging messaging makes logging meals less of a chore. Premium membership unlocks additional nutritional tips and counseling.

2. THE RESOLUTION: Save more money.


If you’re looking to save money, you first need to understand where you’re spending money. The Mint app is a personal money manager that helps you track expenses, bills, investments and savings. Mint allows you to set monthly budgets with customized spending categories and since the connects with your bank accounts and credit cards, you get real-time financial tracking. Treated yourself a bit too much this month? Mint will send you a friendly notification letting you know to slow down. The app also provides scenario-based advice, encouraging you to make the most of your financial health. The best thing about Mint? It’s totally free to use.

3. THE RESOLUTION: Travel the world.


Half the stress of traveling is planning for your trip. Before you can kick back on the beach you need to make arrangements, lots of them. Lodging, transportation, sightseeing and more. The Noken app curates a trip based on your budget and activity preferences and coordinates everything in between, from rental cars and hotels to meals and tours. All you have to do is choose your destination and book a flight. Now I haven’t personally tried this one out but I’m a planner so I love the idea of having all my day’s details sorted out before I even head out. Noken currently services trips to Japan, Iceland and Portugal.

4. THE RESOLUTION: Be more active.


If you don’t have access to a gym or simply prefer working out in the comfort of your own home, the 8Fit app may be for you. After you input your goals and current fitness level, the app generates an at-home workout plan to help get you to where you want to be. Each workout includes thorough explanations of each exercise and allows you to tailor the moves to your abilities. Crank up the music and follow along with instructional videos. With workouts as short as 9 minutes, you’ll certainly be able to fit their programs into your busy schedule.

5. THE RESOLUTION: Learn a new language.


It truly is never too late to learn a new language. Whether you’re trying to master the language of love or planning a trip to Germany and simply need to pick up the basics, Duolingo has you covered. The app uses a number of fun and interactive exercises to help you read, write, and speak one of their 37 languages offered. I love using the app to stay fluent in my third language, just a few minutes a day can sharpen up your skills. Add your friends to start some friendly competition or join a club to practice alongside other learners.
